The New Nutrition Mission by UPA Government

The UPA government, which has been critical of its own 'deficiencies' in tacking nutritional challenges, has chalked out a plan to meet the food requirement of over eight crore children in the country.

"The government plans to convert the existing 'ineffective' Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) into a national mission, which would target eight crore children in the age group of 0-6 years, mostly under two years, in 14 lakh anganwadis," a top government official said.

The idea has been mooted by the women and child development ministry on the lines of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and Sarva Sikhsha Abhiyan.

1.These regulations may be called the Homoeopathic Practitioners (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Code of Ethics) Regulations, 1982. 

Homeopathy education in Bangladesh

In order to have a proper study about the homeopathy education and research in Bangladesh, the Ministry of Health and Family Planning of Government of India sent a medical team comprising of higher officials that included Dr Asish Dutta, assistant secretary (CCH) and Dr Kumar Vivekananda, research officer (CCRH) to Bangladesh for a weeklong visit from July 15 to July 21.

According to a reliable source, the Bangladesh government has requested the Government of India to consider the homeopathy degree of Bangladesh as equivalent to that of India so that the students of the neighbouring country could come to India to pursue their post graduation studies on the subject.

Compulsory Rural service for KMC doctors

The candidates completing undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses this year may have to serve in rural areas to get a permanent registration from Karnataka Medical Council (KMC), if Medical Education Minister A S Ramdas has his way.

Replying to a question by Ramanath Rai (Cong) in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Ramdas said the draft bill seeking to make one-year rural service compulsory for MBBS and postgraduate medical doctors will be tabled in the ongoing Assembly session.

“If the legislation is enacted, 3,000 MBBS and 1,110 post-graduate doctors will have to work in rural areas. This will help overcome shortage of doctors in government hospitals in rural areas,” the minister said. The rural service is made on a precondition to obtain permanent registration as practising doctors from the Karnataka Medical Council.

Recognition for Homeopathy in Nepal

 Indian government has recognised Nepal's homeopathic therapy studies.The recognition has been given on the special initiative of the Nepal Homeopathic Medical Association Central Office, Biratnagar.

The Central Council of Homeopathy has given recognition to the bachelor level degrees of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) of Nepal's Purbanchal University (PU) Biratnagar, the Association said.

The Indian government recognised the curriculum of PU from its Academic Committee. Some 56 doctors have passed from the Biratnagar Homeopathic College so far. Now, even the Indian students can study in Nepal after the recognition.

AYUSH homeopathic doctors reinstated

The UP government on Wednesday reinstated 2,000 ayurvedic, unani and homeopathy (Ayush) doctors whose services had been terminated by the Mayawati government. The BSP government had justified its stand saying that these doctors were not of much use as there was no budget to buy medicines prescribed by them.

But the Akhilesh Yadav government believes that Ayush doctors could be used to tackle the crisis of shortage of doctors up to some extent.

"At present, the state cadre has around 9,500 doctors against a sanctioned strength of 13,500. This huge gap can be fulfilled up to some extent by Ayush doctors," said a health official.

"These doctors would at least save the common man from the clutches of quacks," he added.

General hints in homeopathic prescribing

•  "Know your drugs by their peculiarities just as you recognize your fiends not by the number of limbs but by their idiosyncrasies." (Dr. Margaret Tyler).
•  Type and temperament do not rule out a remedy if other indications correspond. If present, however, they are a valuable confirmation.
•  Do not think that remedies particularly adapted to women are never indicated in the male sex. Sepia, for example, is frequently called for in men.
•  Never prescribe on one symptom alone but on the whole symptom-complex, remembering always that symptoms have a relative value. "Generals" and "mentals" rank first, then "peculiars" and finally "particulars". "Generals" are symptoms which the patient refers to his "ego", while "particulars" are referred to his complaint; e.g. , "I feel worse in winter" is a general, but "My rheumatism is worse in cold weather" is a particular. "Particulars" are invariably emphasized by the patient.
•  As a rule unless symptoms are well marked they may be discarded.

Issues at Dr Abhin Chandra Homeopathic Medical

College Students of Dr Abhin Chandra Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneshwar on Tuesday set a two-day deadline for the college authorities to take steps to revaluate the back papers of seven students, who flunked the tests. "We gave a memorandum to the principal requesting him to facilitate rechecking of papers of the seven students. If our demand is not fulfilled within two days, we will protest," said Soumya Ranjan Pani, a student.

college principal Dr Surya Narayan Mishra said "I have communicated the demand of students to the examination controller of Utkal University, which evaluated the papers," He also lodged a complaint against unknown students, who vandalized the college property on Monday.

States wasted NRHM funds

The status report on the performance of the first phase of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) published by the Centre says that Kerala has not utilized an amount of Rs 408.90 crore out of the Rs 1682.27 crore sanctioned.

The worst phase of the NRHM fund uitlization in the state was during the period between 2006 and 2009 as per the status report. During 2006-07, the state did not utilize Rs 119.36 crore, in 2007-08, Rs.269.18 crore and during 2008-09, Rs.160.86 crore.

The state was sanctioned a fund of Rs 110.08 crore in 2005-06, Rs 151.40 crore in 2006-07, Rs 293.85 crore in 2007-08, Rs 222.88 crore in 2008-09, Rs 237.61 crore in 2009-10, Rs 253.42 crore in 2010-11 and Rs 413 crore in 2011-12.

Electro-homeopathy Issue In Supreme Court

A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court has stayed the Allahabad high court order describing the electro homeopath's practice as unrecognized system of medicine.

In February this year, the high court had dismissed a plea filed by the Indian Electro Homeopathy Medical Council and another, which had approached the court with plea that principal secretary, medical and health of UP be directed to decide their representation in the light of a government of India order issued on November 25, 2003, and May 5, 2010. HC had held that electro homeopathy is not a recognized system of medicine and cannot be prescribed for curing the diseases or for any purpose.

AYUSH doctors temporarily withdraw strike

Practitioners of AYUSH (Ayurveda,Yoga, Unani, Sidda and Homeopathic), who had been protesting for the past three days seeking an amendment to the rules that will allow them to administer allopathic drugs in emergencies, withdrew their strike on Monday. The withdrawal is temporary and followed Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar’s assurance that the issues raised by them would be discussed in the Assembly on Tuesday. The message was passed on to them by health minister Aravind Limbavali.

Dr N.A. Magadum, President, AYUSH Federation of India, Karnataka Chapter, said: “On Monday, Mr Limbavali arrived at the strike venue in the Freedom Park and assured us that our demand will be discussed in the Assembly on Tuesday and action will be taken immediately.” Meanwhile, if it does not materialise then we would again begin with our protest, he added.

Cancer Remedy by Dr Mathur

Explanation sought by the Supreme Court from the ministry of health and family welfare as to why it was averse to holding clinical trial of a homoeopathic medicine, apparently meant to cure cancer patients.

According to the PIL Gurgaon based Dr Mathur has been treating cancer patients with the medicine since 1999 after he got it patented with the government. He had also been issued license to manufacture and sell the medicine.

“Even if there is 10%t chance of its (medicine) success, you must go ahead with it,"a bench of Justice BS Chauhan and Justice Swatanter Kumar said while hearing public interest litigation (PIL) wanting a court direction to the government to “commission research for homoeopathic composition for cure of cancer.”

Moved by World Homeopathic Development Organisation, the PIL claims the drug, invented by Dr AM Mathur, could be an efficacious, cost effective and safe alternative treatment for cancer patients. The petition was moved following the doctor’s failure to convince ministry of health and family welfare’s department of Ayush and Central Council for Research in Homeopathy to hold clinical trial and promote it for cancer treatment.

Kashmir failed to promote homeopathy,says health Minister

Stating that private practice by doctors is unfortunate, Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma Monday said successive regimes in the State have failed to promote homeopathic system of treatment in the State.

“60 per cent world population still believes in homeopathic system of treatment and only 40 per cent prefer allopathic treatment. But unfortunately, the successive governments in the State have ignored homeopathic system of treatment and have failed to promote it,” Sharma said during an inaugural function of 50-bed Unani Hospital at Shalteng.

The health minister said present government was serious in promoting the homeopathic system. “The government has taken several projects in hand to build adequate infrastructure for its promotion in last three years. We need to promote this system of treatment as it is without any side effects.

Action against doctors over uterus removal

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday promised 'strict action' if the uterus of any woman out of the reported 16,000 removed under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was done without reason.

Kumar said he had ordered a probe in the matter and strict action would be taken against those found guilty.

Health care indicator worst in UP

Uttar Pradesh (UP) emerged as the state having the worst health indicators in the country.

The Annual Health Survey (2010-11) to assess the impact of the government’s flagship health programme, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), found that nearly 60% of child deliveries in the nine states surveyed were done outside hospitals.

It also found that every fifth mother in these states did not receive post-natal medical care and that fewer than 50% of the families used contraceptives or other family planning methods.

The survey covered 20.1 million people in 284 districts. It collected data related to nine vital indicators—crude birth rate, crude death rate, total fertility rate, infant mortality rate, neo-natal mortality rate, child sex ratio, under-five mortality, contraceptive prevalence rate, and female’s mean age at marriage.

The survey was conducted between 2010 and 2011 for reference years 2007-2009—two years after NRHM was initiated. It identified 57 districts—including 34 in UP—as having the worst health indicators in the country.

Free services and treatment to pregnant women

A central government programme to provide free services and treatment to pregnant women and newborns will be launched in the state soon.

Besides rolling out the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), the state government has also decided to set up four more hospitals dedicated to women and children at a cost of Rs 96 crore at Ponnanni in Malappuram district, Vaikkom in Kottayam and in Wayanad's Sulthan Batheri, besides one in Thrissur district hospital.

The JSSK would ensure quality post-natal care for women, since most deaths were reported during the postpartum period. It would also provide free treatment to newborns (up to 30 days) in government-run health institutions.

Findings suggest that internet use has a positive effect on depression

It is known that rates of depression increase with age. Research from the University of Illinois found the incidence of depression was at its lowest around the age of 45, and highest among the over-80s Loneliness, social isolation and lack of emotional support are among the reasons for the trend.

In the new study – the biggest so far on the health effects of internet use among older people – participants were asked whether they regularly used the internet and were then assessed for mental illness.

‘Our findings suggest that internet use has a positive effect on depression,’ says Dr Shelia Cotten, who led the research at the University of Alabama and other centres. ncreasing numbers of older people are going online, with the latest statistics from the Pew Research Centre, a US think-tank, showing that a third of over-65s use social-networking sites, compared with six per cent three years ago.

Karnataka AYUSH doctors for strike

Nearly 25,000 doctors affiliated to AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) Federation of India’s Karnataka branch are planning to go on an indefinite strike from today unless the government allows them to prescribe some common allopathic drugs for emergency cases. A list of 20 common emergency allopathic drugs helpful in treating emergency cases and vetted by high powered committee that includes eminent heart surgeon Dr Devi Prasad Shetty has been sent to the government for approval.

Nearly 14 states including Maharashtra have already made these changes. “Our single point charter of demand for agitation starting from July 20 is for the government to make it legal for AYUSH fraternity to give allopathic drugs,” he said.

Tripura to set up New Homeopathic Colleges

The Tripura government has decided to set up three more professional colleges.the government will set up these colleges mainly of Dental, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic disciplines in public-private partnership (PPP) models. “The ayurvedic college will be established at Udaipur, the homeopathic college at Kailasahar in northern Tripura and the dental college in Agartala,” said Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty . He said many private organisations from India had submitted bids expressing their keenness to set up the colleges.

The minister said: “For the ayurvedic and homeopathic colleges, the central government has sanctioned Rs.8.10 crore.

IMA to move court

Unhappy with the government's announcement to allow other practitioners to legally prescribe allopathic drugs in Maharashtra, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) is planning to move court.

On Friday the government had announced that ayurveda, homeopathy and unani practitioners would soon be able to legally prescribe allopathic medicines in Maharashtra provided they completed a one-year course in pharmacology.

The allopathic doctors are unhappy with this decision. IMA state secretary Jayesh Lele said it takes an MBBS doctor five years to learn pharmacology. "Three years are given only to practise it. How can one learn pharmacology from a text-book in one year and be allowed to prescribe allopathic medicines?" he asked, adding it will be like playing with the patient's life.

NRHM has spend 96% of its fund for Ernakulam

National Rural Health Mission spent 96% of its fund allotted to Ernakulam during 2011-12. Of the Rs 67.36 crore allotted, Rs 64.52 crore was used for various projects, including neo-natal healthcare and vaccination programmes.

NRHM district manager Dr K V Beena said, 40 medical camps were organized last year, attended by 47,219 patients. Last year, five laparoscopic tubectomy camps and two non-scalpel vasectomy camps were organized. Around 8,567 women and 302 men underwent sterilization.

Homeopathic Eczema treatment and importance of correct remedy

Here a is a case pointing to the importance of the correct remedy in curing a case of eczema.Eczema is used to describe dermatitis and these are allergies and not infection of the skin. The girl child 3yrs of age has a eczema on her right ankle as seen on the photograph. On case taking they revealed that the problem had started about 2yrs back and was treated by ayurvedic medicine and when it aggravated they turned on to the Allopathic mode of treatment,both of which had a lot of external application and finally they were able to remove (suppress) the eczema. Study Pharmacology to practice Allopathy- says Maharashtra

Maharashtra government today told the Legislative Assembly that doctors wanting to practice allopathy should study pharmacology subject and an ordinance to this effect will be promulgated next month.

Karnataka to invest on NRHM Projects

Karnataka health and family welfare department has planned to invest Rs.83 crore under the National Rural Health Mission(NRHM) where it is in the process of finalizing the public private partnerships (PPP) for five infrastructure projects that will help spur the healthcare activities and make the services more efficient in the state. The project is structured under BOOT (Build Own Operate Transfer )will span for a period of five years.

MoU signed for teenage health improvement

Bihar goverment today signed a memorandum of understanding with an international organisation EngenderHealth for important health related programmes for adolescent representative and sexual health (ARSH).

Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH) programme is an important component under Reproductive and Child Health H (RCH H) program of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM)

The programme aims at improving the health of adolescents through creating awareness among adolescents on ARSH issues, generating demand for ARSH services and making quality services available and accessible to teenagers.

NRHM to start newborn-screening programme

The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is all set to start newborn-screening programmes in all government hospitals in the state. This is part of the mission's bid to save newborn babies from neonatal disorders. The screening tests will be done free of cost. 

Remove NRHM Mission Director-says SFI

Imphal:Students Federation of India (SFI) has demanded removal of Devesh Deval from the post of Mission Director, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) over alleged charges of deceitfully misusing funds. Addressing media persons at its office at Paona Bazaar today, Th Mocha, President, SFI, Manipur State Council, asserted that implementation of NRHM has become a complete failure on account of poor administrative ability of Devesh Deval and his insincere attitude towards implementation of the scheme.
 There have been various Mission Directors of NRHM in the state, but such insincere attitude and unprofessional attitude was never witnessed, he added. Mocha further alleged that Devesh Deval has been giving away the salaries of the NRHM staffs at his own disposal.

Homeopathic Treatment for warts-HPV

A wart is generally a small, rough growth, typically on a human’s hands or feet but often other locations, that can resemble a cauliflower like excrescence. Viral warts Most people will have a wart at some time in their lives. Their prevalence is highest in childhood,(childhood diseases) and they affect an estimated 4–5% of schoolchildren . 

Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV),which has still not been cultured in vitro.more than 70 ‘types’ of the virus have been recognized by DNA sequencing; each has its own range of clinical manifestations. HPV-1, 2 and 4, for example, are found in common warts, whereas HPV-3 is found in plane warts, and HPV-6, 11, 16 and 18 are most common in genital warts. Infections occur when wart virus in skin scales comes into contact with breaches in the skin or mucous membranes.

Strike to be launched by AYUSH doctors from July 20

Pressing to be allowed to prescribe allopathic medicines during emergencies, AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) doctors have threatened to launch an indefinite strike across the State from July 20. 

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, office-bearers of the Ayush Federation of India, Karnataka, said the decision to go on a Statewide strike was taken as there had been no positive development on the issue. They said that from July 20, AYUSH doctors in all the district centres and other places would close their clinics and hospitals and begin an indefinite strike. “The AYUSH institutions and students have extended support to us,” they said.

Two year old kid falls ill after being vaccinated

A two month old kid fell ill in Ghatampur area(KANPUR) after he was given DPT vaccine by a health worker here on Wednesday. The doctors at Ghatampur CHS referred the kid to LLR hospital after seeing the seriousness of the case.  

NRHM funds allocation based on performance

For the first time ever, funds allocated to states under the country's flagship National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) will be cut by almost 15% if they fail to place doctors and health workers (even on contractual basis) to districts with the worst health index.
